Belfast features many neighborhood murals reflecting the political & cultural “Troubles” throughout 20th century Northern Ireland. This mural celebrates the Protestant/Loyalist militants known as the Ulster Freedom Fighters.

“Peace Walls” in Belfast were built following the 1969 Northern Ireland riots and “the Troubles.”  The walls were built to minimize violence between the Irish Catholic “nationalist” neighborhoods and the British Protestant “unionist” neighborhoods.  This wall is taller than the U.S. Mexico border fence and the Great Wall of China. There has been talk that the wall may be removed within ten years to reflect a more peaceful time but most locals want it to remain.

A rope bridge links the mainland to the tiny island of Carrickarede.  Fishermen erected it to check their salmon nets over 350 years ago and it has been rebuilt many times.

The salmon have moved on but the bridge continues to be rebuilt for tourists who dare the shaky walk almost 90 feet above the crashing waves. Don’t look down!

…and what a stunning view of Northern Ireland – and even Scotland – from that tiny island.

The “Wild Atlantic Way” is one of the longest coastal routes in the world, winding 1,600 miles along the entire untamed west coast of the Emerald Isle.  We drove most of it, enjoying its beaches, towering cliffs, picturesque towns and the people who make them unforgettable.
